FOR THE ANIMALS
When we moved to Sarapiqui to begin Oropel, we quickly noticed a sizable population of street dogs. Immediately, we established efforts to address this issue. We created, published and distributed over 200 children's coloring books teaching proper pet care. We partnered with the mayor and veterinarians to provide resources for spay and neuter. And we began bringing much-needed supplies from the States for local rescue and shelter efforts.
This problem came to us, directly and unexpectedly, when Fernanda arrived at our construction site. Before we had running water, we had a street dog. She now calls Oropel home, and is a favorite amongst our guests.
Fernanda was followed by Mora, and later Joey. These younger dogs came with medical neglect and required varying levels of veterinary care. Despite the heartache and challenges, we took great pride in rehabilitating these incredible pups.
We now recognize that in order to continue helping the street dogs of Sarapiqui we must place healthy, well-socialized animals in loving homes. We therefore created this initiative to advertise dogs ready for adoption. Although it is emotional to part with the dogs we've worked so hard to heal, we recognize this as necessary to continue our work for the many more local dogs in need.
Please read on to see stories of the dogs available for overseas adoption. Individuals interested in bringing home any of these wonderful Costa Rican pups will be granted a complimentary one (1) night stay at Oropel to facilitate the animal's pick-up, in addition to support in completing all necessary paperwork for animal export into its new home country.
We welcome all inquiries at hello@oropellodge.com. Thank you for learning more about our efforts, and our animals.

JOEY

Gender: Male
Age: Young (less than 1 year)
Size: Medium (35 pounds)
Joey came to Oropel after he was attacked with a machete. He suffered a terrible case of mange as a puppy, that took months of treatment to heal. His fur continues to grow in. Today, Joey is an incredibly playful and energetic pup that gets along with female dogs, chickens and cows.
Joey prefers to stay close to his humans (showing no preference in gender), and does well returning when called. He is excellent at fetch, and partial to soft toys that squeak. He can be nippy when playing, but responds quickly to stern words of correction.
He has a protective nature, barking at unfamiliar guests, but has displayed no signs of aggression. His best features are his unique grumbles and super-expressive face, revealing the whites around his eyes when he is playful and/or judgmental.
MORA

Gender: Female
Age: Young (between 1-2 years)
Size: Small-Medium (30 pounds)
Mora spent the first part of her life attached to a dog house by a short chain. On the rare occasions where she was set loose, she would run up to Oropel and chase Fernanda through the jungle. Mora's owners soon realized she was much happier at Oropel.
Mora is a hunting breed and has tendencies to chase wild animals. She is incredibly social and playful, especially with other young dogs, and displays high-energy. She is very kind and gentle, particularly with children, although her jumping requires ongoing training.
A home with a large (fenced) backyard and active children would be a dream come true for Mora, who hates being alone. She likes to race. Appearing like a Dr. Seuss character, she is slender and long. She loves fiercely and is goofy, but intelligent. Spayed.
